Rhinoplasty is a surgery performed to correct a variety of nasal concerns, either for a medical and/or cosmetic purpose. In this day and age, more and more men and women are lining up for rhinoplasty for a number of reasons.
Unlike the facial rejuvenation surgeries that reverse aging signs and other damage, rhinoplasty procedure is a bit different. In fact, rhinoplasty results are considered to be long-term, and with the right surgeon and technique, they last a lifetime.
The nose doesn’t change once we are considered fully grown, so making changes any time after this stage of development will mostly stay just the same. Aging of the skin also tends to affect other areas of the face and not the nose.
Once you have changed the structure and look of your nose through rhinoplasty surgery, you’re going to have that nose forever. The only time it will change is if a patient decides to reshape it again through revision rhinoplasty. (Note: revision rhinoplasty is not needed if the surgery was performed successfully according to the patient’s expectations)
The Ideal Age for Rhinoplasty Surgery
Although there is no certain right age to have rhinoplasty, it could be said that between 18 and 40 years old is regarded as the best range. The reason for this is that, by this time, patients have developed physically and in maturity to be a good candidate for rhinoplasty, and their skin still maintains youthful elasticity. This elasticity makes it easier to make changes and recover quickly while also minimizing the chance of complications.
You are motivated to undergo rhinoplasty (whatever your motivation might be) and you are wondering if you are too young for the surgery? Read on!
In the recent years, bullying in high school seems to have reached a new peak, with social media and Instagram filters helping to broaden the attack. A great number of teens who are teased for the way their noses look turn to rhinoplasty surgery for the answers. Some teenagers want to escape the bullying, others want the nose they’ve always dreamed of, and others just want to breathe more easily.
The main constraining factor among teens considering rhinoplasty isn’t age, but instead ensuring the nose is fully developed. The best rhinoplasty results are found with a fully shaped nose.
In this case, girls tend to develop a little faster than boys, so they can get a nose job younger than boys. As such, at Cygnus Clinic our youngest female rhinoplasty patients are recommended to be at least 16 years old.
On the other hand, for boys, the typical recommendation is at least 17 years old. The exact right age, regardless of gender, still varies from one individual to the next.
It is important to highlight that the full formation of the nose is not the only consideration for rhinoplasty for young people. It’s also important to consider the individual’s maturity, whether they are emotionally ready to deal with a significant cosmetic change. We would like to note that all of our patients younger than 18 years old, require consent from their parent/guardian to undergo the surgery.
Most of our rhinoplasty patients over the age of 40 say that they have been thinking for years about getting the procedure done.
Don’t worry, you haven’t waited too long.
While there is no upper age limit for this procedure, you should understand that the approach and results may be affected. It is important to consider that the recovery time is generally a bit longer for older patients, for instance: , swelling is slower to drop, incisions don’t heal as quickly, and skin doesn’t bounce back right away like it used to. However, these factors shouldn’t be limiting for preventing older patients from getting the surgery. It simply means that extra precautions will be taken.
Age alone is not a conflicting factor to a surgical procedure.
A rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is intended to make the patient look and feel better about their appearance by manipulating the shape and size of the nose to compliment surrounding facial features and can be tailored to a patient of any age.
It is of a key importance that the patient’s general well-being is healthy. As long as the patient has no chronic diseases that will contribute a risk during any surgical procedure, they are good to go! At Cygnus Clinic, all of our patients undergo all the necessary medical and blood examinations prior to the date of their surgery. Safety always comes first!
So all in all, as long as you are in good health, and you have enough time to take out of your schedule for a proper recovery, you are not “too old” to undergo a rhinoplasty. The best age for rhinoplasty is whenever you, the patient, feel prepared for a nose job.
